Isabelle Tollenaere

Isabelle Tollenaere (Ghent, 1984) is an independent filmmaker and artist from Belgium, making short films, feature length films and installations, that playfully move between the codes and conventions of documentary and fiction, film and contemporary art. Her work deals with the connections between the consant shifts in reality and the memory of the past. Her filmography includes Viva Paradis (2011), Battles (2015), The Remembered Film (2018) and Victoria (2020). Her films have been widely presented, amongst others at IFFR (Fipresci award 2015), Centre Pompidou, Viennale, Visions Du Réel, FID Marseille, IDFA, CPH:DOX, 25FPS (Grand Jury Prize 2018) and IndieLisboa (Special Jury Prize 2020). Together with Sofie Benoot and Liesbeth De Ceulaer, she directed Victoria (2020), which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in the Forum programme and won the Caligari Prize.

Not far from Los Angeles lies the unfinished desert city of California City. A 25-year-old Lashay T. Warren attempts to build a new life there. A visual rummage through the dusty streets that Lashay playfully describes.
